Old T-shirts, New Purpose: TGC Asia Explores Upcycling with Zero Waste Malaysia
It takes around 2,700 litres of water to produce a single cotton T-shirt. Yet many are discarded long before they have reached the end of their life.
As part of its ongoing commitment to corporate sustainability, employee engagement and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) initiatives, TGC Asia recently partnered with Zero Waste Malaysia to conduct a hands-on upcycling workshop that encouraged employees to rethink waste and discover how everyday items can be given a meaningful second life.
During the No-Sew Bags: Transforming T-shirts into Totes workshop, employees transformed old T-shirts into reusable tote bags using simple cutting and knotting techniques—no sewing required. Participants also added their own personal touches with ribbons, charms, patches and fabric scraps, resulting in a colourful collection of unique creations.
But the workshop wasn't really about making tote bags.
It was about challenging the way we think about "waste" and recognising that something old can still have value.
Throughout the session, employees discovered that sustainability doesn't always require major lifestyle changes. Sometimes, it simply begins by looking at everyday items differently and asking, "Can this have a second life?”
To make the workshop even more engaging, participants took part in a friendly competition with three award categories:
- People's Choice Award
- Most Sustainable Creation Award
- "Would You Carry This to the Mall?" Award
The competition sparked plenty of creativity, laughter and conversation, while reinforcing the importance of reuse, upcycling and waste reduction in our daily lives.
TGC Asia extends its sincere appreciation to Zero Waste Malaysia for delivering an inspiring workshop that demonstrated how sustainability can be practical, creative and enjoyable. Through initiatives like this, we hope to encourage our employees to embrace more sustainable habits both at work and at home.
Because sustainability isn't always about buying something new.
Sometimes, it begins by seeing new possibilities in something we already have.
