The Incredibles 2 - A Great Movie with a Very Important Message
It's amazing where inspiration comes from. It doesn't always arise from the places you might expect. Who would have imagined that The Incredibles 2, the latest summer smash of an animated film from Pixar, would contain so many messages that matter to us, the people who work at TGC Asia? Here's what we can all learn from The Incredibles.
Delegation is a brilliant way to get more done
The art of delegating responsibilities is well worth learning. Some people find it very hard to let go of their responsibilities at work. The busier they get, the more they have to do, the more stressed they are... but they still find it hard to hand over some of the work to someone else.
That's what happens to Elastigirl, who is forced to make some difficult choices when she returns to work. She loves her job, of course, but she also adores her children. She wrongly believes her husband can't handle it, can't help her bring up their kids, but she's wrong. She's a brilliant mum, but he's a brilliant dad.
When you delegate wisely, your working life is so much more enjoyable, so much easier for you and the people you work with. Think about it and you realise a task shared really is a task halved.
Love your work and you'll feel happy every day
Mr. Incredible hates his job as an insurance salesman. He's just getting by, ticking off the days. How sad is that? We spend about a third of every working week at the office, and it makes life so much better when you enjoy your job. We should all be passionate about the work we do, whatever it happens to be.
The best thing of all is this: if you consciously decide to enjoy your work, you will enjoy it more. On the other hand if you decide you hate your job, you will probably find it more unpleasant than it needs to be. Where happiness is concerned, a positive attitude is everything.
Your values matter - Stick to them
At TGC, we know how important it is to set the right example for the people we employ. Now and again you might find yourself under pressure to ignore your values or put them to one side. It's important to stick to your values even when you're under pressure. You know what's right, and it's your job to help your colleagues maintain their own values and take the right path. That's what The Incredibles do.
It's OK to get it wrong – Just learn from your mistakes
Nobody is perfect. We all make mistakes. It's how you handle those mistakes that matters. Take Mr. Incredible. He might be an excellent father. He knows everything there is to know about the world, the universe, and everything in it. But he still gets it wrong sometimes, even though he's a superhuman. The trick is to learn from your mistakes and not repeat them. As he says in the film, “I’m used to knowing what to do, but I learn new ways every day.”
Being able to learn and adapt is part of what it means to be human. Don't be scared of getting things wrong – it happens to everyone. Just try not to make the exact same mistake twice!
Together we're stronger
The Incredibles 2 is all about family. But the same principles apply to work, where your colleagues play a family role. The movie saw The Incredibles beating the Syndrome's horrible machine. But they only managed to defeat it because they worked together, combining everyone's superpowers. We like to enjoy the same thing at work. We know that teamwork is the best way to achieve our goals. Individually we are strong. But together we are invincible!
We are all equal
It's interesting to see that The Incredibles has a strong feminist message. The Oscar-winning actress Holly Hunter, who plays Elastigirl, is an incredibly powerful female superhero and a great role model. If you're one of our female employees, never doubt that you are equal. Equality is really important to our business, to our future, to our reputation.
